New report

Finland’s Baltic Sea Fisheries at a Crossroads – societal cost or asset

A new report shows that Finland’s current large-scale trawl fishing in the Baltic Sea results in a socio-economic loss of nearly five million euros per year. This is at a time when several fish stocks are at dangerously low levels. Calculations also show that a new fisheries policy shifting focus from industrial trawling to primarily coastal fishing for food fish could generate socio-economic benefits of up to 25 million euros annually.

What drives us

Our goal is a healthy sea full of life, for us and future generations. The path to achieving this is not easy and the challenges are complex, but we will never give up.

Change is possible

It is possible to reverse the development in the Baltic Sea, but it requires decisions based on science and measures that deliver real results. For example, research shows that oxygen-depleted seabed areas would have been around 80 percent larger if no actions had been taken to reduce eutrophication.

Examples lead the way

The outlook is bleak for several of the Baltic Sea’s fish species, but there are examples of other countries successfully rebuilding depleted fish stocks, so why shouldn’t we be able to do the same?
