Has large-scale fishing reduced herring stocks in the inner archipelago?

To determine whether large-scale fishing in coastal areas in recent years has reduced herring stocks in the archipelago, we need to understand the stock from a historical perspective.

The aim of the project is to analyse echo sounder data collected between 1985 and 2012. Such a long data series allows for a comparison with current data and whether there are significant deviations. However, the old dataset was collected using different types of echo sounders and software. By making old and new datasets comparable, we can establish a baseline against which future data can be compared.

The project is being carried out by Stockholm University. Through BalticWaters’ program for research projects and pre-studies, the project has been awarded a grant of 950,000 Swedish kronor.
