Optimising the release of cod larvae
Human impacts and climate change are threatening Baltic Sea cod. As the natural reproduction and recruitment of cod are limited, the release of cod larvae reared in hatcheries has emerged as a potential conservation strategy.
Through controlled experiments, researchers at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) will investigate the appropriate developmental stage for the release of cod larvae. Molecular tools will be used to study the effects of different environmental conditions on larval hatching and release. The knowledge gained from the project will be a key piece of the puzzle for the ReCod project – release of juvenile cod in the Baltic Sea.
Optimising the release of cod larvae is being carried out by DTU. Through BalticWaters’ program for research projects and pre-studies, the project has been awarded a grant of SEK 1,000,000.
