Where and when do herring spawn in the Stockholm archipelago?
The Stockholm archipelago is an important spawning ground for herring, but herring numbers have declined.
The Stockholm archipelago is an important spawning ground for herring, but herring numbers have declined.
The aim of the project is to build knowledge about where and when herring spawn and how the entire stock is structured in the Stockholm archipelago. Fundamental to herring productivity is the diversity of sub-populations that spawn at different times of the year and in different locations. The spawning grounds are well known to fishermen, whilst scientific studies are few and far between. By increasing our understanding of when and where herring spawn, we can design conservation measures and take action to help the stock recover.
The project is being carried out by Stockholm University. Through BalticWaters’ program for research projects and pre-studies, the project has been awarded a grant of SEK 999,876.
