Apotea supports the release of 10,000 cod fry into the Baltic Sea

BalticWaters is launching a new partnership with Apotea, which is supporting the release of 10,000 cod fry as part of the ReCod project – release of small cod into the Baltic Sea. Through this partnership, Apotea is contributing to concrete, long-term efforts to strengthen the threatened eastern cod stock.
Cod is a key species in the Baltic Sea, but stocks have declined sharply following decades of overfishing, poor management and deteriorating environmental conditions. As part of ReCod, BalticWaters is developing methods to rear and release small cod fry that have a better chance of surviving in the wild – an important step towards re-establishing viable stocks in the long term.

- BalticWater’s work to re-establish cod stocks in the Baltic Sea is exactly the kind of practical project we want to support. The release of small cod fry into the sea makes environmental work both real and hopeful. We are therefore delighted to be able to support BalticWater’s ReCod project, says Pär Svärdson, CEO Apotea.
This partnership means that more cod fry can be released into selected locations in the Baltic Sea, whilst research into which methods yield the highest survival rates continues at the BalticWaters Fish Laboratory in Studsvik.
