
DYNAMITE
The green transition is increasing the pressure on the sea. Extensive shipping, the expansion of offshore wind power and industrial fishing are placing a strain on ecosystems that are already under severe pressure. Despite this, there is no comprehensive overview of how different activities collectively affect Sweden’s marine environment. This makes it difficult to take decisions that take the bigger picture into account and minimise environmental impact.
The DYNAMITE research project (dynamic decision support for transformative marine spatial planning) aims to develop a decision-support tool that takes into account the overall impact of various activities on the marine environment and its services – such as food, climate regulation and biodiversity. The environmental impact of shipping is extensive and will be given particular attention.
The end product will be a decision-support tool that identifies where ecosystems are most vulnerable and can be used to minimise the environmental impact of various activities. By linking different types of impact, it will be possible to develop various scenarios, for example relating to increased shipping, expanded wind power or changing climate conditions.
The project is being carried out by researchers, communicators and policy experts from Chalmers University of Technology, the University of Gothenburg, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, Södertörn University, Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment and BalticWaters, in close collaboration with relevant authorities and industries.
