Increase knowledge about herring and sprat

Knowledge about the age and growth of fish in the Baltic Sea is often incomplete and may even be inaccurate, leading to a lack of understanding of their importance for the ecosystem and fisheries.

The aim of the project is to investigate the age and lifespan of herring and sprat to improve understanding of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Recent developments in genomics research show that the age structure of stocks is important for long-term sustainability – knowledge that ultimately contributes to ecosystem management and a healthier Baltic Sea.

The project is being carried out by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Through BalticWater’s program for research projects and pre-studies, the project has been awarded a grant of SEK 991,900 for the scientific part of the project.
