Running a new laboratory is a technically challenging process. Mats Anderling is new to fish research but has long experience of laboratory management and a strong engagement for the Baltic Sea. He is now taking on the role of operations manager for BalticWater’s new fish research laboratory, with the aim of building a unique research environment that can contribute to a living sea.
The sea has never been far away for Mats. Having grown up by the shore outside Trosa, he has a special relationship with the Baltic Sea. And perhaps it was his interest in the marine environment that made him choose to educate himself as a biologist.
– I have always sailed and dived a lot and have seen at close quarters how the sea has changed during my lifetime. It’s a completely different sea today – overfished and with less fish, he says.
Mats has also worked as a biology teacher, but it was in the high-tech environment of research laboratories that he really got hooked. Much of his professional life has been spent building and managing different laboratory systems. And it is with this experience in mind that he now takes on the role of operations manager for BalticWater’s new fish research laboratory.
– I really see how my different experiences complement each other in this role, where I understand the projects as a biologist, but also the technical aspects of the research, says Mats.
Five quick questions:
Name: Mats Anderling
Previous roles: Worked as a manager and IT manager at a research laboratory, and as an upper secondary school biology teacher.
Favourite Baltic Sea species: Broadnosed pipefish
Favourite Baltic Sea activity: Being out in the archipelago, preferably in a kayak. Also snorkelling, if the water temperature allows it!
First thing to do in my new role: Ensure that all necessary authorisations for the operation of the laboratory are in place and complete the relevant qualification courses.

The challenges of a brand new laboratory environment are many, and Mats’ task will be to develop the laboratory’s functions and ensure that all parts of the facility work optimally to support the practical implementation of the projects.
– It will be a challenge because a lot is being done for the first time, but above all it is exciting to be part of this important initiative.
For Mats, the assignment is not just about technology and operations – it is also a chance to contribute to something bigger.
– I look forward to creating the best possible conditions for the projects to contribute to new knowledge about the Baltic Sea’s fish species and a healthier sea, concludes Mats.
We wish Mats a warm welcome to the Foundation!

About BalticWaters Fish Laboratory
The Foundation is establishing a laboratory to create the conditions for new research on Baltic Sea fisheries, support release of endangered fish species, development of aquaculture and knowledge building. The laboratory is being built in Studsvik Tech Park outside Nyköping and is expected to be ready for operation by the end of 2025. BalticWaters is investing a total of SEK 170 million. Axfood has become a long-term partner by contributing to the operation of the fish research laboratory, advice, contacts and knowledge.
