BalticWaters is participating in the four-year research project DYNAMITE (dynamic decision support for transformative marine spatial planning), which is funded by Formas as part of the Blue Transformation – Coast and Sea initiative. The project aims to improve the environment in our sea and create the conditions for a sustainable blue economy.

The green transition is increasing pressure on the sea, through activities such as shipping, wind power and fishing. At the same time, there is no comprehensive picture of how these activities are utilised and how they collectively impact Sweden’s marine environment. DYNAMITE will therefore collect data and develop models that show how different activities together affect the marine environment and ecosystem services, such as food, climate regulation and biodiversity.

Together with Chalmers, the University of Gothenburg, SMHI and Södertörn University, we will work to strengthen knowledge of how the sea is used and how this can be done in a way that does not deplete the ecosystem.

BalticWaters contributes by disseminating knowledge and raising these issues in the public debate. Through communication, policy work and dialogue with decision-makers, we hope to contribute to long-term sustainable decisions for a living sea.

“This project gives us a unique opportunity to strengthen the knowledge base for decisions that can contribute to the sustainable use of our sea. Being able to do this alongside such highly qualified researchers and experts feels both exciting and meaningful,” says Helene Limén, analyst at BalticWaters.
